A playlist for having to look, yet again, at your shadow.
I am still on Spotify, primarily because it’s still the easiest app for making and sharing playlists. I try to compile a new playlist every month or every season, and it doesn’t have to be thematic, just a mood, something that feels like a coherent set of music. I’ve assembled one for February, reusing my “Febrile Fibonacci” nonsense from 2014.
The strands running through this one (Spotify link here) are R&B, art pop, lite-prog perhaps. I say goodbye to Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Yukihiro Takahashi with Sandii’s lovely take on his pensive rocker “Drip Dry Eyes.” I rescue the great Debora Iyall of Romeo Void from the dollar bin (almost literally; two bucks a couple weeks ago) as she gets an assist on piano by the Patti Smith Group’s Richard Sohl. I peer into the near distance with Teena Marie’s “You Make Love Like Springtime,” Irish leftfield-composer/multipotentialite Roger Doyle’s “Spring Is Coming With a Strawberry in the Mouth,” and into the farther distance San Giovanni Bassista’s 1984 Italo B-side “Summer Sweat” (produced by Alexander Robotnick). And that SWV yacht soul interpolation is fresh forever, a crisp breeze in any Lyft when the radio’s throwing back.
